The Cutting Room Floor

Over the course of the past three years I've gone from an occasional freelancer to a full-time game designer. During that time, a few projects, ideas, and other morsels have tumbled from various projects to pile up on my hard disk. This archive is a collection of old material from various sources that never saw print.

New 1/2/03!

Xylex the Mind Flayer: A critically threat submitted to (and rejected by) Dungeon, Xylex is a mind flayer druid from the underdark who seeks to carry the fight to the surface world. I though this article would be interesting not only for use in a game but also as an example of the level of detail that is necessary to correctly stat up an NPC for publication.

Original Archive

The Arcane Specialist: A sorcerer that specializes in a school of magic! Originally concepted out for use in an abortive home game, typed up for submission to an open call (but never sent because, well, it isn't my best work by any measure), sent to a 'zine as a filler freebie if they needed something to finish out an issue, and now posted to the Internet.
The Razorfiend: These guys are knifefighters inspired in part by the hitman from Desperado. I sent an earlier draft to my friends Bobby and Jim. They said "Whoa. Too powerful." This class is probably a little too tough, but isn't so bad as long as any PCs or NPCs with it have low Strength scores.
Gnomish Magic Items: This file is an old, rejected submission to Dragon. I put a lot of pressure on myself to do a good job on it and ended up trying too hard. A writer without confidence is like car without an engine. It ain't going anywhere. Not my best work, but hey, it's FREE.
Digital Mastery: Another failed Dragon article, this one from early 1999. It's one of the first things I tried to sell, and it really shows. In an odd way, it feels good to look back and realize that I've gotten much better at this entire writing thing.
The Art of Villainy: Wow, yet another failed Dragon article, this one also from early 1999. This one actually scored a personal note from Dave Gross asking me to make revisions and resubmit it. He ended up turning it down. Still, that was an important boost to my self-confidence.
Unknown Armies Archive: Waaaay back in 1999, I decided to try and build a company that produced PDF roleplaying products. The first project I tackled as a compendium of NPCs for the Unknown Armies RPG. That project fell apart, but luckily not all was loss. This d20 thing came out, and I ended up writing a few things for it.
