Freaks, Mutants, and other Fauna of the Occult Underground

"The square is seldom if ever cool," says Bloomquist. "He is not 'with it,' that is, he doesn't know 'what's happening.' But if he manages to figure it out, he moves up a notch to 'hip.' And if he can bring himself to approve of what's happening, he becomes 'groovy.' And after that, with much luck and perseverance, he can rise to the rank of 'cool.'"

- Dr. E. R. Bloomquist explains the four states of being in the drug culture, from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hunter S. Thompson

The occult underground, much like any other obscure, modern day subculture, lies quite a bit off the beaten path of fast food, professional sports, popular music, and the other icons of 21st century living. Of course, must subcultures are obsessed with some sort of harmless pastime rather than one that lets you, with enough blood, sweat, and sheer maniacal drive, rewrite history or dictate the features of reality's next iteration. But when all's said and done, most members of the occult underground have more in common with the guy who collects train sets than the one avatar locked in on ascending to the Invisible Clergy. The vast masses of people with mystic knowledge, whether legitimate or not, really are nothing more than black-clad hipsters with a superiority complex. The ones that actually have an inkling of the truth aren't given any special mandate to stand above the other fruitcakes, loons, and whack jobs. They're just as likely to get lost in a yammering chorus of flat earth theories, UFO abduction testimonials, and nut jobs who've seen one too many episodes of In Search Of. Alex Abel's operation calls it the flea circus not only because the rank and file occult underground are tiny bugs beneath TNI's feet. Often, the underground's power struggles and major players are little more than a sideshow act that has little effect on the major power players like TNI, the Sleepers, or the Cult of the Naked Goddess.

Presented here are a variety of GMCs for use in Unknown Armies. I originally wrote these in early 1999 when I first bought the game and was so inspired by it that I decided to pursue an old dream of mine: professional game design.

Clint Henderson: Attention seeking fraud.
Duane Fields: Could'a been a contender.
Harry Reed: Victim of circumstance or murderous psychopath?
Louis Drew: Defender of the innocent.
The Mother Goddess Cult: What about the children?
Murray Segal: Mad inventor. Or simply mad. He can't remember which.
Trent St. George and Sherry McIntyre: Love means never having to say "I'm sorry I cut off my own hand and turned you into an ugly hunchback."
