The Cult of the Mother Goddess

Jamie Pierce has been pregnant for the past five years. She knows that this isn't normal, but she has already given birth three times and Daddy says that she isn't quite done yet. Her father tells her that Jamie is a very special woman, someone who will be the mother not just to her own kids, but to all the world's children. She has been chosen by God to bear children that otherwise could never be born, either because their parents sought an abortion or because they practiced birth control. The truth is slightly more sinister and far more selfish than Enos Pierce is willing to tell his daughter. When Jamie was twelve, her mother, Annie, died of cancer. Enos was devastated by the loss. A student of the occult, he buried himself in his hobby to help soothe his grief. For two years he did little more than sleep, work, and research some way to bring Annie back. Jamie slowly dropped out of his sight. Neglected by her father, Jamie turned to drugs, booze, and casual sex to fill the void in her life. As luck would have it, her father discovered the Invisible Clergy, and the archetype of the mother, at about the same time that Jamie announced to him that she was pregnant. A plan to bring back Annie formed in Enos' mind: if a member of the Invisible Clergy couldn't bring back Annie, than no one could. Enos had also come across a ritual used in the old days to delay births. The ritual was meant to assure that a woman wouldn't give birth during a journey or any other inopportune time. As far as Enos could tell, the ritual would last indefinitely. After using the ritual on Jamie, he let his daughter's pregnancy drag into its eleventh month before he sprung his cover story. To help soothe her suspicion, he kidnapped an infant, heavily sedated Jamie, and presented the child to her when she came to.

Currently, Enos and Jamie travel the United States in an RV. Enos sold his house and most of his possessions. A few heavy investments in tech stocks paid him back handsomely, and he currently lives off the interest generated by his small fortune, supplementing that with the occasional odd job. Over the past five years, Enos has kidnapped three children and presented them to Jamie as her "children." Enos has taken care to target children in slums and other run down areas, both to keep the media uproar over a kidnapping muted and to help reinforce his story with Jamie. After all, how else could she give birth to black and Hispanic children if she wasn't doing God's work? Jamie's pregnancy seems stuck in the ninth month, and so far no one has thought anything of the old man and his pregnant daughter as they wander across America. Enos continues to watch for any signs of his daughter's ascension.

Jamie Pierce

Jamie Pierce was your typical teenaged girl. She loved horses, the boy band of the moment, and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Her chance at a normal life died with her mother. Unable to find any comfort from her father, she turned to booze and sex to soothe her sorrow. She was terrified that her father would kick her out of the house for getting pregnant. Her baby’s father could have been any one of half a dozen guys. She was shocked and delighted when he welcomed her announcement with support and kindness, and was even more delighted as he began to once again take an active interest in her life. Jamie is terrified that her father will once again turn her back on her. She doesn't completely understand what is going on, but she knows that her condition makes her father very happy and very interested in her. She dotes over her "children" and cherishes them all the more because they are, as her father tells her, unwanted and unloved by their real parents. She can empathize with that, and is willing to die for them because of it.

Enos Pierce

Enos Pierce was always an oddball. In school, he was the funny looking kid who got picked on a lot. In college, he was the weirdo who was always buried in some esoteric book of occult lore. When Annie Henderson took pity on him one day in the college dining hall and sat next to him, it was love at first sight for Enos. He shed his old ways and transformed himself into an outgoing, caring person. Slowly, over time, Enos's efforts paid off. Annie grew to love him, and the two were married shortly after graduation. Years passed, the couple had a daughter, and life seemed fine.

And then Annie grew sick and died, and poor Enos reverted back to his old ways. He lost contact with all of his friends, cut himself off from his family, and even shunned his teenaged daughter. He returned again to the occult desperate for any hope of bringing his beloved Annie back. So far, his plan has gone off without too many problems.

Enos is obsessed to the point of madness with bringing Annie back. He no longer sees his daughter as his own flesh and blood, but as just another tool in his quest. He never imagined himself a kidnapper, but has convinced himself that the children are better off with an avatar of the mother looking after them than any normal human mother. The strain of always moving across the US, terrified that he will be discovered as a kidnapper, is dwarfed by the terror that his plan won't work.

Abe, Bernard, Claire, and Danielle

Unimaginatively enough, Enos has chosen to name the children he has "adopted" for Jamie alphabetically in order of their "birth." Abe, the oldest, is barely four. Bernard is three, Claire is two, and Danielle just turned one.

The children don’t think of their situation as out of the ordinary. As far as they’re concerned, every family has white, black, and Latino members. The kids are completely ignorant about how odd their current situation is.
